Getting to Santiago

This is Villafranca del Bierzo in the morning. We spent a lot of time in the car today getting to the end of the pilgrimage road.

Pilgrims on the way down the mountain:

We visited a Monastery in a little town on the way:

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA:

FACT:  Do you know that in Europe many places say that witches are good luck. This happens in Galicia, the north western part of Spain (called a province or kingdom). You can find lots of images of witches with big noses sitting on their broomsticks. They are considered good luck! Some people say that little statues of witches are more popular than those of Santiago (St. James), the main reason why this city (Santiago de Compostela) exists – and the main reason behind the pilgrimage we have been following.

FACT: People think that in the year 900 or so, a shepherd found the grave of St. James, the disciple who went to teach about Jesus in Spain. This began the pilgrimage of Santiago (which is Spanish for St. James). This is the city we have been exploring today.

We went to the Cathedral of Santiago today. It is the end of the pilgrimage road. The city and the road are full of pilgrims who have walked all the way to Santiago. Then we went to a museum in a cathedral. it had lots of stuff covered in rubies, emeralds, and gold. Then we went to a cathedral service and I mostly slept through most of it. I am very tired from the trip. After that, we walked through the town and went to lots of stores and then went back to the hotel and had a nice dinner with the students. Our hotel has kitchens and we all have apartments. Then we went to sleep.

P.S. bye bye see you on my next blog
