The Second Day in France

Today we visited three cathedrals (really big churches) in Toulouse, France. Some of these cathedrals are almost 1000 years old.

The first one is called St. Sernin and is the biggest cathedral of this style in all of Europe. You could walk all around the cathedral and even go underneath  the altar and see the crypt – where famous saints are buried in very big and beautiful boxes called a sarcophagus. When the cathedral was built, it was a very important place for people to go if they were traveling on a pilgrimage (a trip to a special place, usually a religious destination).

The second cathedral was called Les Jacobins. It is famous for its ceiling and the way the design  looks like a palm tree. The put a big mirror around the main column (a support made of stone) so that you could see how high the ceiling really is. The picture here is taken into the mirror. Les Jacobins also has a cloister. This is an inner garden where the monks could walk and think and pray. People come into the garden now to do the same thing. That is me sitting in the cloister with the tower of Les Jacobins behind me.

The third cathedral was St. Etienne. Here I am taking a rest. It has been a long day.
